They serve as the basis for rhythmic styles such as bulerías, tangos or alegrías, although they also accompany any style that has rhythm such as seguiriya, soleá por bulería, soleá, tanguillos, guajiras…
To perform flamenco clapping correctly, you need to know the rhythm of each style, the speed, and the nuances of each one.
Flamenco rhythm
The rhythm in flamenco is very distinctive. In addition to using 3/4 time signatures (fandangos or sevillanas) and 4/4 time signatures (tientos, tangos or colombianas), it uses a very peculiar 12-beat rhythm that can be interpreted in many ways.
The accents in that measure would be on the numbers 12 – 3 – 6 – 8 and 10. After this, we would start again.
The styles that use these accents are the most important within flamenco: soleá, alegrías and bulerías mainly.

The footwork, or zapateado, is an element of flamenco dance performed with the feet as percussion, adding rhythmic richness. Originally, it was a style danced only by men. While this style is no longer performed specifically by men, it is a technique used by both women and men in all types of flamenco dance.

Zapateado is also a style of flamenco guitar soloing. Some prominent performers of zapateado have been Paco de Lucía, Esteban de Sanlúcar, and Vicente Amigo.
Flamenco guitar
The flamenco guitar has two main functions within flamenco: that of accompanying and that of soloist, the latter also known as concert guitar.
The accompanying guitar can be for singing or dancing and its main function is the rhythmic and harmonic base.
Solo flamenco guitar playing requires a high level of skill in technique, composition, and performance.
Some prominent flamenco guitarists include Paco de Lucía, Vicente Amigo, Tomatito, Sabicas, Niño Ricardo, and Manolo Sanlúcar.
Flamenco singing
Flamenco singing is distinguished by its timbre and its distinctive wail. It is characteristic of both men and women. It is present both as a solo performance with guitar accompaniment and as an accompaniment to dance, with lyrics appropriate for the occasion.
The themes of flamenco lyrics vary depending on the style. In more serious or solemn styles, the songs will focus on tragedy or love. In more cheerful styles, the aim will be humor or to recount a historical event.
Flamenco costumes
The clothing used in flamenco dancing is very important and one or another will be used depending on the style being danced.
Brighter colors are used in cheerful styles such as alegrías, tangos or guajiras, and more serious or dark colors in styles such as taranto, soleá or seguiriya.
In addition to the traditional costumes for both men and women, other elements are incorporated that further enrich the dance, as well as the attire. These include castanets, hats, shawls, flamenco dresses with trains, canes, and fans.
