The 3 Essential Flamenco Styles – cover post

The three essential flamenco styles at Tablao Flamenco Alma

Have you booked your ticket for our show in Palma de Mallorca and are feeling a tingle of excitement, but also a touch of confusion? Don’t worry. Flamenco music is a world of passion, and our first-time audience members often ask themselves: “What exactly am I seeing and feeling?” The answer lies in the sticks.

Essentially, flamenco is not a single rhythm, but a family of musical and dance styles known as basic flamenco steps. Each beat is a unique emotional code, a code at their own pace (ruler), character, origin and sentiment. Understanding these codes is the key to ensuring that your experience at a Flamenco theatre in Mallorca go from being merely visual to being deeply immersive.

We have selected three essential styles — the Alegrías, the Soleá and the Bulerías — which form the foundation of any live flamenco show. We promise that, after reading this simple guide, you’ll be able to identify and appreciate the mastery of our singers, guitarists and dancers much more fully in Alma Flamenco Tablao. The aim is that, when you sit down at your table, you know exactly when the ‘Alegría’ turns solemn or when the ‘Soleá’ breaks into a celebration.

💃 Unravelling the basic flamenco styles: The key to understanding the soul of the show

To the uninitiated, all styles of flamenco may sound similar, full of passion and complaint. But each style serves a different dramatic and emotional purpose. Let’s take a closer look at the three pillars that make up most tablao repertoires.

Alegrías: The festive spirit and rhythm of Cádiz (The most cheerful)

If there’s one style of dance that captures the festive spirit and the radiance of the south, it’s the Alegrías.

The ‘Alegrías’ are, as their name suggests, a style associated with happiness and celebration. Originating in Cádiz, the ‘Alegrías’ drew part of their structure from ballroom dance songs and Christmas carols, but evolved into a distinctly flamenco style, both elegant and full of life.

Its character and pace: The ‘Alegrías’ are characterised by being a form of song and dance lively, brilliant and very rhythmic. It is the style that most inspires dancing and is often used to open major shows because of its infectious energy. Its rhythm is fast and pronounced, giving rise to a dance full of turns, elegant arm movements and nimble footwork.

  • Key feature for identifying them: They are based on a 12-beat metre. In the dance, they usually include an a cappella rhythmic section known as the silence, followed by a final burst of speed known as the chorus or the departure.
  • At Tablao Flamenco Alma: When you see our male or female flamenco dancers If they take to the stage with haughty movements and a mischievous smile, they are most likely performing some ‘Alegrías’. If the dance is performed by a female dancer, she will often be wearing a vibrant ruffled dress. The music is light, and the guitar keeps a steady, lively rhythm. It is the soundtrack to happiness.

Soleá: The mother of flamenco singing (The most solemn and profound)

From the Alegría we move on to its emotional counterpart: the Soleá. This ‘palo’ is not merely a style; it is the philosophical and technical foundation of much of flamenco. It is so fundamental that it is known by the majestic title of “The mother of flamenco singing”.

Its character and pace: La Soleá (Meaning of ‘Soleá’: Solitude or Feeling of Solitude) is the most solemn, profound and melancholic. A tempo slow and unhurried. The lyrics speak of love, death, the transience of life and the penalty (a deep sorrow) that accompanies the soul. The slow, drawn-out rhythm allows the singer to show off his skills with the complaints, those heart-rending laments that epitomise the purest expression of flamenco.

  • Key feature for identifying it: The singer takes centre stage. The dance is characterised by great solemnity and restraint. The dancer uses slow, dramatic movements, focusing on facial expression and the restrained power of the footwork. It is a rhythmic meditation.
  • At Tablao Flamenco Alma: The Soleá will invite you to reflect. Listen to how the singing draws out the vowels, filling the air in the room with a universal feeling. This is the ultimate expression of the flamenco music: an explanation of the soul.

Bulerías: The grand finale and pure energy (The most festive)

If the Soleá is all about seriousness, the Bulería is pure mayhem. It is the youngest style, the most rhythmically complex, and undoubtedly the most fun and spontaneous.

Its character and pace: The Bulería is festive, bustling, relaxed and fast-paced. Although its metre is the same as that of the Alegría and the Soleá (12 beats), it is played at breakneck speed and with a much more complex rhythmic accent. It is so devilishly fast that it often sounds like a 6/8, making it a technical challenge for guitarists.

  • Key feature for identifying it: It is the stick traditionally used for the end of the party. It is performed in a more improvised style and often allows several artists to take to the stage in turn for brief dance routines, creating an atmosphere of total revelry.
  • At Tablao Flamenco Alma: Get ready to be swept away by the energy of this style. The artists come together and spur each other on with commotion (“Olé!”, “Come on!”, “That’s it!”) and the dance is short, lively and full of grace. It is proof that flamenco is as sophisticated in its expression of sorrow as it is in its expression of joy.
